At the Centre for Skull Base Surgery, various specialist departments from the UKR work closely together to coordinate the best possible treatment for our patients in interdisciplinary case meetings:
In addition to injuries to the base of the skull, benign tumours of the peripheral nervous system (schwannomas) and the cerebellopontine angle (acoustic neuromas) are treated. Treatment focusses on preserving the auditory and facial nerves. Our range of services also includes processes of the anterior and lateral skull base, especially glomus tumours, as well as processes of the temporal bone tip. Another focus of our treatment is the surgical treatment of tumours in the area of the pituitary gland. In co-operation with the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurosurgery, we use the so-called "4-hand technique".
Safe surgical methods
Surgical interventions are carried out on an interdisciplinary basis. To increase safety, we use computer-assisted navigation and neuromonitoring where necessary. For surgeries on the anterior skull base, we often choose the endoscopic route through the nose (minimally invasive) so that no external scars are visible.
Surgery with minimal blood
In order to be able to operate with as little blood as possible, tumours with a lot of blood (angiofibroma, glomus tumour) are closed by the radiology department before the surgery. The so-called cell saver is also available. This allows the patient's own blood, which is collected during the surgery, to be processed and returned directly to the patient.
