Light therapy

A lot of skin diseases can be successfully treated with light or phototherapy alone or in combination with other therapies. The active principle is to mobilise the body's own defence system through UV rays. This can reduce inflammation and itching and promote the healing process. In our light outpatient clinic, we hold informative discussions with patients about upcoming therapy concepts or examinations before they are applied. Example applications are:

UV radiation

Affected skin areas are irradiated with ultraviolet light (UV light). The inflammatory reactions in the skin are inhibited and cell division is slowed down.

PUVA photochemotherapy

This special form of chemotherapy is used for superficial skin tumours. By applying a special substance in the form of a cream or bath additive, the skin is sensitised to light. This is followed by irradiation with UVA light, which in combination with the substance leads to a chemical reaction (photodynamic effect) and destroys the diseased cells. The healthy tissue remains largely untouched.
