Photodynamic therapy is a new minimally invasive treatment method that offers a particularly gentle alternative to surgery. It utilises the principle of semi-selective, light-induced tissue destruction. This means that diseased skin cells are specifically destroyed and the surrounding healthy tissue is largely spared.
Destruction of the diseased tissue
Before the therapy, a special cream is applied to the affected area and left on for three hours. The substances in the cream accumulate more in the diseased tissue than in healthy tissue and make it sensitive to light. The light-sensitive, diseased cells can now be irradiated with red light and destroyed in a targeted manner.
