Our experienced team specialises in diagnosing and treating all diseases of the liver (hepatology), bile ducts and pancreas. As the largest organ in the human body, the liver plays an important role in breaking down and eliminating metabolites. It helps detoxify the body and is responsible for the production of proteins, enzymes and neurotransmitters. It also plays a central role in the human immune system. The function of the liver cannot be replaced, even temporarily, because of its complex and varied tasks. You can't live without a functioning liver.
Damage to the liver
The liver can be damaged, either acutely or permanently (chronically), by many diseases. The most common causes are viral infections, metabolic diseases such as fatty liver, toxic exposure, genetic and autoimmune diseases. If left untreated, these can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, scarring of the liver tissue (a so-called "shrivelled liver") and loss of function as well as liver cancer.
