Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Clinical phase of the dentistry programme
In the anaesthesia and extraction course (6th semester), the theoretical and practical principles of administering injections for pain and tooth removal are taught to students. Based on a lecture, the students learn the basic techniques for block and terminal anaesthesia. In the block training, the theoretical anaesthesia techniques learned in the classroom are practised, and the students become acquainted with tooth extraction and suture techniques using a model jaw. In addition, the fundamentals of cardiopulmonary resuscitation are taught in a supplemental emergency course.
In surgery courses 1 and 2, students are integrated into the daily routine of the ward during the 7th and 8th semesters and are used as assistants during surgeries in our department. The courses offer future dentists the opportunity to learn the methods of a tooth removal under supervision.
The theoretical principles of dental, oral and maxillofacial medicine (DOM) and oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) are taught in lectures over the entire clinical phase of study.
The practical supplement to the theoretical principles taught is Auscultando & Practicando, which teaches students how to approach the medical examination. Under supervision, course participants learn the systematic procedure of an examination up to the point of making a diagnosis. In this context, important differential diagnoses are discussed, taking into account the respective radiology diagnostics.
In addition to the demonstrated treatment options of an implant restoration in prosthodontics, students are taught the basics of implant placement in a hands-on course in our department. Using models, prospective dentists are given the opportunity to carry out supervised implant placement.
