Paediatric dentistry

Paediatric dentistry includes:

  • Emergency and follow-up care after dental accidents
  • Prevention and individualised prophylaxis of caries in the primary and mixed dentition
  • Group prophylaxis
  • Treatment of MIH (molar incisor hypomineralisation) and other dental malformations
  • The oral health of children and adolescents has steadily improved in recent years thanks to prevention and individualised prophylaxis. . According to the Fifth Oral Health Study by the Institute of German Dentists (published in 2018), eight out of ten children aged twelve, i.e. 81 per cent, are now completely caries-free and have healthy teeth.

The key: Good dental and oral hygiene

As part of individual prophylaxis, we will assess the state of your oral hygiene and your teeth. Learning proper dental and oral hygiene is the basis for future dental health. This is why we place special emphasis on oral health and oral hygiene advice, depending on the age of the child. Communication with parents is also very important to us.

Fluoridation of all teeth protects tooth enamel from disease. Fissure sealing can also prevent tooth decay. Fissures and pits in the permanent molars are sealed with a special resin. This effectively protects the chewing surfaces, which are particularly susceptible to caries due to their fissures.

  • Teeth that are particularly sensitive to temperature and touch may be caused by a mineralisation disorder of the permanent incisors or molars.

    Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH)

Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a developmental disease of the tooth structure. It affects around 10 per cent of primary school children in Germany. The enamel is softer and more porous than in healthy teeth. Affected teeth already have white-yellowish-brownish stains when they erupt. One or more permanent molars and incisors may be affected. MIH teeth are significantly more susceptible to caries than healthy teeth. It is important that MIH is detected at an early stage and to have it treated by a dentist.

    Important: Early diagnosis and treatment

The dentist can make the diagnosis when the first permanent molars and incisors erupt at around six to eight years of age. Early treatment can help prevent possible permanent damage from MIH.
