Obesity and metabolic syndrome

We treat patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome, most of whom have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Obesity is affecting more and more people, young and old. It is caused by poor diet and lack of exercise. Genetic predisposition also plays a role.

Only rarely is obesity caused by a specific endocrine disease, such as

  • Cushing’s syndrome
  • hypothyroidism
  • congenital genetic disorder (e.g. Prader-Willi syndrome)

Metabolic syndrome

Obesity does not usually occur on its own, but in combination with a number of other conditions known as metabolic syndrome.

The metabolic syndrome includes

  • obesity (especially abdominal obesity)
  • high blood pressure
  • lipometabolic disorders
  • glucose metabolism disorders
  • possibly increased urinary albumin excretion

Patients with metabolic syndrome have a significantly increased cardiovascular risk, i.e. a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
