Onkologie

Medical oncology is concerned with malignant diseases of vital (solid) organs. These diseases can arise in any tissue of the body.

Our main areas of focus

  • Tumours of the bones and soft tissues
  • Testicular and germ cell tumours
  • Malignancies with an unclear primary tumour
  • Tumours of the head and neck area
  • Rare tumours (e.g. neuroendocrine tumours)
  • Complex metastases (involving multiple organ systems)
  • Care for patients with additional medical problems or comorbidities

Interdisciplinary cooperation

For the following diseases, we work together with experts from other specialist areas on an interdisciplinary basis:

  • Lung tumours
  • Urogenital tumours
  • Breast carcinomas (breast cancer) and other gynaecological tumours
  • Gastrointestinal tumours (tumours of the intestinal tract)
  • Melanoma (skin cancer)

Treatment

Treatment decisions are made jointly by our multidisciplinary tumour boards. Differentiated molecular pathological examinations are also important for solid tumours (pathological formation of new tissue). The disease is studied at the level of molecules such as DNA, RNA, proteins and other cellular components in order to make better use of innovative targeted therapies. The so-called Molecular Tumour Board has been established at UKR for this purpose.

Not all patients can be cured with drug treatment alone (= systemic therapy). Increasingly, systemic therapy is used before or after surgery to improve the chances of recovery and/or to reduce the size of the tumour.

We prefer to carry out the treatment as an outpatient therapy. However, as the disease progresses, more complex chemotherapy or supportive care may be required and patients may be admitted to hospital.
