Spinal surgery

The Neurosurgical Regensburg University Clinic has been offering spinal surgery at the highest level for decades.

Thanks to a highly qualified treatment team with many years of experience and state-of-the-art technical equipment, we are able to offer the entire spectrum of spinal surgery.  This enables us to provide the best possible care, even in complex cases such as revision surgery or for critically ill patients.

This is achieved through close interdisciplinary collaboration with our colleagues in trauma surgery, radiology, physiotherapy and anaesthesia (pain management) as part of our university Spine Centre, which enjoys an excellent reputation as a centre of excellence.

This is what sets us apart:

  • High level of expertise and experience, even in complex procedures
  • Individual specialist certification of the surgical team at the highest national and international level (DWG Master Certificate, Eurospine Advanced Diploma, etc.)
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology (neuronavigation, robotics, intraoperative neuromonitoring, fluorescence microscopes)
  • Low-risk and gentle procedures using state-of-the-art anaesthesia techniques and minimally invasive or percutaneous surgical approaches
  • Neurosurgical intensive care unit for patients with pre-existing conditions
  • Interdisciplinary spine centre in close cooperation with the specialist departments of Regensburg University Medicine (trauma surgery, radiology, physiotherapy, pain therapy)
  • As the only university centre for maximum care in our region, we also offer a comprehensive scientific spectrum in the field of spinal research and can therefore offer you access to the most modern and innovative treatment methods.
  • If you have spinal problems, we will first discuss the course of the condition with you and carry out a physical examination in our outpatient clinic.

If images have already been taken, we will examine them and explain the possible causes of your symptoms in detail.

At the end of the consultation, you will be given a detailed treatment plan. We will consider whether conservative treatment options have already been exhausted or whether surgery is appropriate in your case. When selecting surgical therapies, we pay particular attention to using the gentlest and most scientifically sound surgical techniques.

  • For persistent symptoms caused by a herniated disc or a narrowing of the nerve exit hole (neuroforaminal stenosis), microsurgical removal of the herniated disc material or decompression of the affected nerve under the microscope can provide immediate relief.

The incidence of disc herniation and neuroforaminal stenosis in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine requires a very individual approach, and we will advise you in detail during your consultation as to whether an operation from the front or from the back offers advantages in your specific case, or whether a (motion-preserving) disc replacement is advisable.

  • The narrowing of the spinal canal, which is very common in the elderly, leads to typical symptoms such as pain in the legs on exertion and a significantly reduced ability to walk. Microsurgical decompression of the bony spinal canal under the microscope can provide permanent relief.

The same applies to cystic changes in the small vertebral joints (facet joint cysts), which can also narrow the spinal canal or nerve exits.

  • Persistent back pain can be caused by instability of the lumbar spine. By inserting screws and a spacer, the painful hypermobility can be stopped. We are one of the few clinics in Germany to have a digitally networked operating theatre with mobile robotic CT (Loop-X, Brainlab AG) and a navigation-assisted robot of the latest generation (Cirq, Brainlab AG) for millimetre-precise and low-radiation screw placement. The desired implant position can be planned individually and with millimetre precision before the operation and the surgical result can be checked directly during the operation. In this way, we achieve the same results as with conventional surgery:

    • Better positioning of the implants
    • A shorter operating time
    • Smaller skin incisions
    • Low blood loss
    • Faster recovery after surgery
