Neurosurgery

Paediatric neurosurgery

Our department specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of infants, children and adolescents with:

  • Brain tumours
  • Cerebrovascular diseases
  • Congenital malformations (suture synostosis, dyraphia, spina bifida)
  • Diseases and injuries of the nervous system, skull and spine

We follow our young patients from diagnosis through treatment to long-term aftercare - often into adulthood.

The medical needs of children are very different from those of adults. Diseases of the developing brain and nervous system therefore require differentiated, age-specific and multidisciplinary management. We work closely with leading centres, including the Centre for Paediatric Oncology, the Centre for Brain Tumours and Radiation Therapy.

  • For surgical treatment, we have the latest generation of state-of-the-art operating theatre equipment. This includes surgical microscopes with fluorescence technology (5-ALA and sodium fluoresceine), neuronavigation, neuroendoscopy, confocal laser endomicroscopy, neuromonitoring, intraoperative ultrasound and functional brain mapping with resting state fMRI.

In selected cases, it is also possible to perform surgery while the patient is awake.

Our experienced surgical team works closely with the departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT, Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Neurology, Neuroradiology, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Paediatric Anaesthesia.

  • As part of the Centre for Paediatric Oncology, we develop personalised treatment for each patient based on the latest scientific evidence. We work closely with the HIT network (brain tumours in children and adolescents) of the German Children's Cancer Foundation and take part in supra-regional research studies.

  • The rarity of some diseases is a particular challenge. As a central regional and supra-regional maximum care provider, we ensure that our patients receive the best possible care through close and trusting cooperation with referring paediatric clinics, social paediatric centres and paediatricians in private practice.

  • In addition to the highest medical and technical standards, we place great emphasis on interpersonal aspects. We recognise that our young patients and their families are in a particularly vulnerable and often stressful situation. That is why we are committed to making them feel that they are in good hands, not only medically but also emotionally.
