Orthodontics
Combined orthodontic-surgical treatment
Pronounced jaw misalignments can also be successfully corrected in adulthood. If orthodontic measures such as tooth movement with "fixed braces" or brackets are not sufficient, we offer combined orthodontic and oral surgery therapy in close cooperation with the Clinic and Polyclinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Extensive diagnostic investigations are required to plan this comprehensive treatment. Based on the findings, we develop an individual treatment plan.
The treatment consists of four phases:
- Orthodontic pre-treatment: the teeth are correctly positioned and aligned in the dental arch. For example, the lower front teeth, which are inclined lingually (towards the tongue), are straightened towards the lip in a mesial bite (when the lower jaw is too far forward). This seems to make the situation worse at first. However, this allows the jaw to be ideally positioned during the operation.
- Dysgnathia surgery: orthodontic treatment must usually be completed before surgery. In exceptional cases, surgery may be performed before orthodontic treatment (surgery-first concept). Jaw misalignment is corrected by surgery on one or both jaws. Precise surgical planning is carried out on an interdisciplinary basis with the Clinic and Polyclinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
- Fine orthodontic adjustment: to achieve an optimal bite, minor malocclusions are corrected after surgery.
- Retention: after active treatment with fixed braces, the treatment result is maintained with removable braces or wires. Further check-ups are necessary.
