Retention phase

Once the active phase of orthodontic treatment is complete, a maintenance phase, known as the retention phase, must follow. This is important to maintain the results of the treatment in the long term.

After teeth have been moved, groups of teeth, or dental arches, tend to partially shift back into their old positions. Teeth can "migrate" or change position throughout life. The more severe the deformity was at the start of treatment, more likely it is to reoccur. Active treatment is therefore always followed by a retention phase.

There are two options for retention:

  • Patients wear removable braces to maintain the correction of their teeth permanently. Initially, they wear them in the afternoon and at night, and later only at night. After a few months, they can reduce the wearing time to twice a week at night, but then for a longer period of time. Failure to do so may lead to relapse. This type of retention requires disciplined cooperation from the patient.

Alternatively, clear retainers made of a very well tolerated material can be worn at night only.

  • The fixed bonded retainer is a thin wire that we attach invisibly to the tongue or palate side of the teeth.

It provides a high level of stability and comfort. Bonded retainers do not require any active cooperation from the patient, but do require good oral hygiene and regular check-ups.

If the retainer becomes loose or breaks, it must be replaced immediately to avoid jeopardising the success of the treatment. We offer regular follow-up appointments to check the retainer.
