Shunt correction procedures
An ideal dialysis shunt can be punctured as often as required. Due to the unusual connection between the arterial and venous systems in the human body and the repeated punctures for dialysis treatment, many changes can occur over time:
- Constrictions with deterioration in dialysis quality
- Enlargement with deterioration of dialysis quality
- Reduced blood flow to the hand
- Stress on the heart
- Bleeding
- Inflammation
- Blockage of the dialysis shunt
To avoid the need for atrial catheterisation (demersal catheter), immediate or planned shunt corrections may be required, either surgically or interventionally, depending on the findings. The best option for you will be discussed, planned or immediately carried out on an interdisciplinary basis by the Department of Vascular Surgery, the dialysis practice responsible for you, the Department of Nephrology and the Institute of Diagnostic Radiology. Interdisciplinary shunt conferences are held regularly to discuss cases.
