In the liver transplant outpatient clinic of the clinic and polyclinic for internal medicine I, we look after patients before a liver transplant (pre-LTx).
Main causes: liver cirrhosis and liver cancer
The main causes of liver transplantation (LTx) are liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, known in medical terminology as hepatocellular carcinoma. Transplantation replaces the diseased organ with a healthy one. This means that the life-threatening consequences of liver cirrhosis can often be cured.
High cure rate for liver cancer
Liver transplantation can also greatly improve the chances of survival for patients with liver cancer. Many can expect to be cured. To find out if someone is eligible for a transplant, organ transplant guidelines require certain criteria to be met. Our pre-LTx consultation hour, which takes place every Thursday, has been set up for this purpose.
Interdisciplinary team of experts
Patients who need a liver transplant are cared for by an interdisciplinary team from the departments of internal medicine I, surgery and anaesthesiology. All decisions are made jointly by the specialists in each area and are supported by our quality management system. The liver transplantation department is part of the Regensburg University Transplant Centre.
