The decision to place a patient on the liver transplant waiting list is made on an interdisciplinary basis at the Liver Transplant Conference.
Eight eyes principle
Decisions are made jointly by a doctor with expertise in liver transplantation from the department of internal medicine I, the department of surgery, the department of anaesthesiology and a representative of the medical director. This eight-eyes principle was already established in our centre before the new guidelines were published. The liver transplant conference is held weekly.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
Experienced colleagues from the institute for X-ray diagnostics are closely involved in the team and play a decisive role, for example, in the allocation of match-MELD points for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Colleagues from the clinic and polyclinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Regensburg district hospital also play a key role in the preparation of liver transplant lists.
Guidelines
The guidelines for organ transplantation published in 2015 are constantly being updated. Fortunately, during the implementation of the guidelines, we found that most of the required measures, such as the treatment of patients with alcohol dependence, were already established in our centre.
The guidelines for organ transplantation in accordance with § 16 TPG (transplantation act), which were adopted by the Executive Board of the German Medical Association at its meeting on 21./22.04.2016, can be found here: Guidelines for organ transplantation
